Harris, Jersey and Muggy Polaris reunite to bring the 21st Century Tour to life! Photo by Tony Healy

The Band That Lives Inside Your TV are back! Polaris, the house band from cult-classic Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete, are escaping from your childhood television set and busting out on a national tour for only the second time ever.

Polaris are Mark Mulcahy (Muggy), David McCaffrey (Jersey), and Scott Boutier (Harris). The three were longtime bandmates in underground favorite Miracle Legion, who’ve also reunited in recent years. Post-Polaris, Mulcahy went on to start an eclectic solo career, becoming one of the most celebrated and revered songwriters making records today. McCaffrey and Boutier played bass and drums together in several acts including Frank Black and the Catholics.

The 21st Century Tour will find Muggy, Jersey and Harris venturing out to 14 US cities between May and August. They’ll bring a mix of Polaris and Miracle Legion songs, plus some surprises to the sets. These shows will be the first since the band’s highly successful Waiting for October Tour in 2014-15, a jaunt across the country that found a generation of now grown-up Nickelodeon fans singing along to every word. The joyful reunion tour culminated in the beautifully recorded and packaged Live At Lincoln Hall double album.

In addition to touring, Polaris’ hit vinyl record, Music from the Adventures of Pete & Pete, will be receiving a special reissue to mark the occasion. The release will be a deluxe vinyl package, including a CD of original demos dating between 1992-95, liner notes from Pete & Pete co-creator Will McRobb, and a complete album lyric sheet. It’s the ultimate edition of a record that Consequence of Sound called ‘a collection of songs that perfectly capture the confusion, whimsy, and wonder of adolescence.’
The 21st Century Tour begins on May 14th in Pawtucket, RI, at The Met and wraps up on August 8th in Maquoketa, IA, at Codfish Hollow. See below for the full itinerary, and keep an eye out for additional dates and news from as more information becomes available.

I know I promoted a story about Devo on the Facebook page for this blog:

I was not expecting Mark Mulcahy to fire up something so quickly after the whirlwind Miracle Legion tour. He did a three show stint in June in NY, Northampton MA, and New Haven CT. At the same time he releases a new video from his brilliant album Possum In The Driveway, Mulcahy also announces he will traverse the Mid-Atlantic and New England areas.

The following comes from Mulcahy’s label, Mezzotint…

April 27, 2017

Well I have barely gotten over my ear bugging from the Miracle Legion Boot & Saddle show (you West Coast folks need to get to the Mezzotint or Miracle Legion web or Facebook pages and get tickets for these last two rockin’ shows!). Haven’t wanted those memories to fade, so I have been putting off sampling my wares from the show, the two disc Polaris Live CD and the two disc live Miracle Legion CD!

Well it looks like I have to (as they used to colloquially say in my youth) shit-or-get-off-the-can.

The Silence Of The Hands That Made The Most Wonderful Sounds… Allan Holdsworth, April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

I didn’t want to get into doing obituaries. But when we lose a talent of the likes of Allan Holdsworth, words must be expressed. I was first fully exposed to Holdsworth’s amazing playing was through his work with the band Bruford. This exposed me to Jeff Berlin (the other Jeff B,) keyboardist Dave Stewart and when Holdsworth was not able, “the unknown” John Clark would fill in.
I had been on a steady diet of King Crimson, I was at the point where I was digging into King Crimson members solo efforts (this was the early 80’s incarnation, Fripp, Belew, Levin, Bruford) when I came across the Bruford albums. Had them special ordered from out of the country. The old completist “had-to-have-them” ethos.
Well when the very first notes from Holdsworth came through, I, as a guitarist changing styles from pop to prog was dumbstruck. The athletic strides of the notes coming from the fretboard, utterly, and totally amazing!! I had never heard a player like him in all my years.
Doubt I will again…
From the desk of MoonJune Promotions, who handled Holdsworth’s promotion:
Dear Friends in Music
Today is a very sad day for me.
R.I.P. Allan Holdsworth (August 6, 1946 – April 16, 2017).
There is no greater measure of a life well lived than the amount of people he had impacted, and by that measure the artist Allan Holdsworth lived a very good life. This man took a plank of wood, a few strings, and some wires and transformed people’s lives in a way that few others have. The ultimate genius of the rarest kind. One of THE greatest musicians ever lived. So much history with Allan between 2001-2016.
You will be missed forever, Allan – Yo Ol’ Geezer, i love You.
Rest In Peace.
My deepest condolences go to his daughters Emily and Louise, his son Sam, and his granddaughter Rori, and everybody else who loved this truly unique man.
All right then, then….

I really am trying to avoid being the blogger of death, but it seems to keep rearing its ugly head. I have many fears for 2017, the Mets winning the world series (for a true Met fan, all this means is the further commercialization of the team), nuclear war from Jung-Un, Trump, Putin, even the domestic effects of Trump. But my biggest fear? We will have a repeat of 2016 and there will be more, wholesale, devastating passings to deal with.

It has been 366 days, to the day since I last posted. I will only say this was out of a legal necessity. I have waited out that contract so now, I am free to publish what and how often I do so. I choose to do so by picking up where we left off last year. Promoting the works and music of Mark Mulcahy and Miracle Legion.

I’ve been touting Mark Mulcahy and Miracle Legion (as well as Polaris) for a long time now. While Mulcahy was off the radar, there wasn’t much to post about. However, since his latest album dropped (the venerable Dear Mark J. Mulcahy, I Love You), he has toured solo, and with his post Miracle Legion band, Polaris. Releases haven’t been lacking as well. Alongside … I Love You, the Nickelodeon requested band Polaris re-released their seminal Music From The Adventure From Pete and Pete on vinyl, we are being treated to another reissue gem, Miracle Legion’s Portrait Of A Damaged Family (this blogger’s favorite ML album). With a plethora of reissued as well as new material, it would make sense that touring be part of the release promotion.

I’ve been away from this blog for a while and for good reasons. The only one you need to know is, I wanted to show my support for Eagles Of Death Metal. I said I would not take down that post until they got back to form. For all you EODM fans, you KNOW the boys came back strong and loud in Paris, with Josh Homme joining in!

So let’s move on to the real meat of the matter, the reunited MIRACLE LEGION!!!

I never thought I’d type that…

EODM Cover

Today is the day, all around the world, that Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme, co-founders of American rock band EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal), release their fourth album, Zipper Down, on CD, digital, vinyl LP and cassette via T-Boy/UMe. EODM’s first new studio release since 2008, Zipper Down has already won media praise and wowed fans who have streamed the album via NPR Music’s exclusive “First Listen” premiere.

On Monday, October 5, EODM will appear on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! for an interview and performance.

EODM’s extensive North American touring continues this month, before the band heads back to Europe for headlining shows in November and December, including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Italy and Spain. See the band’s website for full list of tour dates.

For the Zipper Down sessions at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California, Hughes and Homme co-wrote all of the album’s songs (with the exception of their cover of Duran Duran’s “Save A Prayer”), and performed all of the instruments and vocals themselves. The album is produced by Homme.

“The new album, Zipper Down, really represents to me an attitude and philosophy of life,” says Hughes. “One should not zipper up, they should zipper down and let it all hang out.”

Homme (AKA “Baby Duck”) says, “In an independent study, four out of three doctors say Zipper Down is an eargasm trapped inside a crazerbeam. And I believe them.”

About the album’s lead single, Homme says, “‘Complexity’ is the musical equivalent of holding a lucky rabbit’s foot with the unlucky rabbit still attached.”

“‘Complexity’ is sort of our way of saying, ‘Keep it simple, stupid,’” adds Hughes.

Produced by VICE Media and directed by Alex Hoffman, the forthcoming feature documentary about the charismatic Hughes (AKA “Boots Electric”), The Redemption of the Devil, is an intimate and at times brutally honest portrayal of a year in the life of Jesse Hughes.

EODM was formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California by best friends Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme. Despite the name, EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal) is not a death metal band. The story goes that a friend was introducing Joshua Homme to the death metal genre, and Homme wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. With that, EODM was born. The band released Peace Love Death Metal in 2004, followed by Death By Sexy in 2006, and Heart On in 2008.

Polaris, the band that once only lived in your television is coming to a galaxy near you. Known as the house band for the Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete,  Polaris have never toured and only ever played live once. The fans have been waiting 20 years for this October and now in 2014 it’s finally happening.
The show and the band have become a legend since going off the air. The Adventures of Pete & Pete was about two brothers named Pete, and featured an amazing list of guest stars, like Steve Buscemi, LL Cool J, Patty Hearst, Debby Harry, Michael Stipe, Adam West, John McLaughlin, Iggy Pop and many, many others. Polaris wrote much of the music including the shows iconic theme song “Hey Sandy“. They released an album of music in 1999 and then waited till now to play it live! For a fan of the show, every song in instantly recognizable and this will be the world’s first chance to hear it in person.
Polaris is Mark J. Mulcahy, Scott Boutier and Dave McCaffrey, aka Muggy, Harris and Jersey.  Mulcahy has several solo records. McCaffrey and Boutier were members of Frank Black and the Catholics. All three of them were in the band Miracle Legion.
There is a single planned to coincide with the tour. The song, “Happy Green Moon Face” is the first new Polaris music since the show went off the air in 1996.
The Waiting for October tour dates are:
10/4   – The Met, Providence, RI
10/9   – Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC
10/10 – Spaceland Ballroom, Hamden CT
10/11 – Pearl Street, Northampton MA
10/25 – Codfish Hollow, Maquoketa IA
10/26 – Lincoln Hall, Chicago Il
11/21 – Knitting Factory, Brooklyn NY
11/28 – Johnny Brenda’s, Philly PA
11/29 – Baltimore Soundstage, Baltimore MD
That was a press release I NEVER thought I’d see.  If you read either the review for Mark’s most recent album Dear Mark J. Mulcahy… or his live performance at World Cafe Live, you know he is one of the most talented songwriters as well as being a highly entertaining presence onstage.  If you are local to any of the above listed shows, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the show.
I guarantee Mulcahy will at least make you laugh.

Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel has announced a North American tour behind her sophomore album, Aventine, out now on Play It Again Sam/[PIAS] America. Performing as a trio, with Agnes on piano, accompanied by Anne Müller and Mika Posen (Timber Timbre) on cello and viola respectively, watch the live video for ‘Dorian‘ to see what’s in store on this tour. The video comes from a series recorded in Berlin at Hemathefen Neukölln, which also featured ‘The Curse,’ originally revealed by KCRA.

Rapturously received by critics across Europe, Aventine entered the Top 5 album chart in four countries, reaching No.1 in her native Denmark and No.2 in France. Notable supporters here in the US include KCRW, Mother Jones, and long-running nationally syndicated radio program, Echoes. Aventine, which has already gone platinum in France, follows Agnes’s 2010 debut, Philharmonics, which received a gold award in Holland, platinum awards in Belgium and France, and went quintuple platinum in her native state of Denmark, where Agnes won five Danish Music Awards (the Danish Brits) in 2011. Agnes was also recently invited to perform for the French President, Francois Hollande, at Radio France Inter’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

All of the songs on Aventine were written (music and lyrics), recorded, produced and arranged by Agnes Obel roughly from the beginning of 2012 until late spring 2013, at home in Berlin and in a rented drum studio in the Kreuzberg district.
