WHO’S THAT MAN? ED RANDAZZO IS THAT MAN CELEBRATING 10 YEARS IN THE PA MUSIC BIZ

October 24, 2019

One thing this blog has taught me is, “Stay in your lane”. I’ve dabbled in jazz reviews, world reviews, indie reviews, Americana reviews, and it has brought me to the point where, I need to stay within my personal wheelhouse of expertise. While I may not be the world’s foremost authority on Goth music, I will continue to bait all the Daniel Ash fans with my opinion (yes, Vinnie, that last word, OPINION, stupid Bauhaus loser arguing with my opinion) but I will pick and choose my reviews carefully from this point forward.

So when it was proposed to me that I could do the new Ed Randazzo retrospective, I jumped at the chance. Admittedly, Randazzo’s style of traditional, Americana folk-soul borders suspiciously close to some of the music I have recently sworn-off. For personal reasons I will pay no more attention to Sam Llanas and his crew. Since I will not be committing any further column space about his Americana, why not support a local boy who isn’t a full-of-himself douche who doesn’t appreciate those who were pulling for him, and promoting them to the best of their ability? Randazzo never made any promises, connections or forged any allegiances to go back on.

I have no problem promoting someone who is genuine, earnest, and has bon-a-fide talent. Like Ed…

THE BEST ROCK AND BLUES BAND YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF, MEET DOUG AND THE SLUGS!

May 30, 2018

The Facebook Cover Photo for Doug and The Slugs 40th Anniversary. We thank them for this photo.

I was first introduced to Doug and The Slugs by MTV in the 80’s. Their first video grabbed my attention and I never looked back. Here was this portly, greasy haired singer (I thought that was the look for the video, nope) that, basically, in my head, I was seeing Squiggy from the Laverne And Shirley TV show. Remember him? David L. Lander was the actor’s name. But here in the U.S., he looked like the buffoon from the TV show.

America is stupid.

But the resemblance aside, this guy could wail! I mean the expression in Doug Bennett’s vocals were unmatched down here. No one was doing torch songs like “The River”. But when Doug did them, man you felt it. To be clear, I HATED Laverne & Shirley and really hated the Squiggy character. So for Bennett to make me love their music was an uphill battle but after the song “Real Enough” started to get rotation on MTV, it was hard to hold the grudge.

Then in 2004, the unthinkable would occur. As he was wont to do, Doug would be onstage with an adult beverage. It would lead to his demise is the word we have down here. He had toured with various incarnations of the band up until 2004-ish. He was 53.

MARK MULCAHY, THE MUSICAL MACHINE, MARCHES TO HIS OWN BEAT DURING MINI-TOUR, ALSO RELEASES NEW VIDEO!

I know I promoted a story about Devo on the Facebook page for this blog: https://www.facebook.com/groups/bouleblog/?ref=bookmarks

I was not expecting Mark Mulcahy to fire up something so quickly after the whirlwind Miracle Legion tour. He did a three show stint in June in NY, Northampton MA, and New Haven CT. At the same time he releases a new video from his brilliant album Possum In The Driveway, Mulcahy also announces he will traverse the Mid-Atlantic and New England areas.

The following comes from Mulcahy’s label, Mezzotint…

YOU CAN GET IN ON A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO SEE POPTONE, AND EXPERIENCE BAUHAUS, LOVE & ROCKETS AND TONES ON TAIL!!!

July 19, 2017

Reviving his desire to perform live, Daniel Ash is touring his personal brand of dark wave music to the East Coast with POPTONE. This blue moon opportunity still has tickets available at various venues. DON’T MISS IT! Photo courtesy of Sunshine Jacobson

Way back in the late 80’s, when a friend of mine introduced me to Tones On Tail, never did I think I would have a chance to see them. They were so niche, so target-marketed, there was no way they would be coming to my area, much less would I hear about the shows in NYC or Philly, unless by chance, they happened to be promoted in a New York Daily News or Village Voice that I happened to pick up at my fave newsstand (who would special order both of those newspapers for me). Nearly 30 years later, not only am I getting to see some remnants of Tones On Tail, but they are tossing in Bauhaus, Love & Rockets as well as Daniel Ash solo material into the set list.

Who are ‘they’? They are POPTONE!

BAUHAUS, LOVE AND ROCKETS, TONES ON TAIL, ALL LIVE ON AGAIN WITH DANIEL ASH, DIVA DOMPE AND KEVIN HASKINS AS POPTONE!!!

Throughout the 80’s and into the 90’s, there was a “Goth” movement in art, fashion, music, etc. I use quotations around Goth as that was the label affixed to the style of music that Bauhaus, Smiths, Cure, et. al. came out with. Loosely associated with pale face paint with black accents, high hair, etc. etc. yawn etc.

Besides, and most importantly, I wouldn’t know Goth if it bit me on the neck.

I have a hypothesis, I’m willing to proffer it here…

OUR MULCAHY CUP RUNNETH OVER. IT RUNS OVER A POSSUM IN THE DRIVEWAY, OUT TOMORROW!!

April 27, 2017

Well I have barely gotten over my ear bugging from the Miracle Legion Boot & Saddle show (you West Coast folks need to get to the Mezzotint or Miracle Legion web or Facebook pages and get tickets for these last two rockin’ shows!). Haven’t wanted those memories to fade, so I have been putting off sampling my wares from the show, the two disc Polaris Live CD and the two disc live Miracle Legion CD!

Well it looks like I have to (as they used to colloquially say in my youth) shit-or-get-off-the-can.

It has been 366 days, to the day since I last posted. I will only say this was out of a legal necessity. I have waited out that contract so now, I am free to publish what and how often I do so. I choose to do so by picking up where we left off last year. Promoting the works and music of Mark Mulcahy and Miracle Legion.

I’ve been touting Mark Mulcahy and Miracle Legion (as well as Polaris) for a long time now. While Mulcahy was off the radar, there wasn’t much to post about. However, since his latest album dropped (the venerable Dear Mark J. Mulcahy, I Love You), he has toured solo, and with his post Miracle Legion band, Polaris. Releases haven’t been lacking as well. Alongside … I Love You, the Nickelodeon requested band Polaris re-released their seminal Music From The Adventure From Pete and Pete on vinyl, we are being treated to another reissue gem, Miracle Legion’s Portrait Of A Damaged Family (this blogger’s favorite ML album). With a plethora of reissued as well as new material, it would make sense that touring be part of the release promotion.

I’ve been away from this blog for a while and for good reasons. The only one you need to know is, I wanted to show my support for Eagles Of Death Metal. I said I would not take down that post until they got back to form. For all you EODM fans, you KNOW the boys came back strong and loud in Paris, with Josh Homme joining in!

So let’s move on to the real meat of the matter, the reunited MIRACLE LEGION!!!

I never thought I’d type that…

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL NEW ALBUM ZIPPER DOWN OUT NOW

October 3, 2015

EODM Cover

Today is the day, all around the world, that Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme, co-founders of American rock band EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal), release their fourth album, Zipper Down, on CD, digital, vinyl LP and cassette via T-Boy/UMe. EODM’s first new studio release since 2008, Zipper Down has already won media praise and wowed fans who have streamed the album via NPR Music’s exclusive “First Listen” premiere.

On Monday, October 5, EODM will appear on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! for an interview and performance.

EODM’s extensive North American touring continues this month, before the band heads back to Europe for headlining shows in November and December, including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Italy and Spain. See the band’s website for full list of tour dates.

For the Zipper Down sessions at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California, Hughes and Homme co-wrote all of the album’s songs (with the exception of their cover of Duran Duran’s “Save A Prayer”), and performed all of the instruments and vocals themselves. The album is produced by Homme.

“The new album, Zipper Down, really represents to me an attitude and philosophy of life,” says Hughes. “One should not zipper up, they should zipper down and let it all hang out.”

Homme (AKA “Baby Duck”) says, “In an independent study, four out of three doctors say Zipper Down is an eargasm trapped inside a crazerbeam. And I believe them.”

About the album’s lead single, Homme says, “‘Complexity’ is the musical equivalent of holding a lucky rabbit’s foot with the unlucky rabbit still attached.”

“‘Complexity’ is sort of our way of saying, ‘Keep it simple, stupid,’” adds Hughes.

Produced by VICE Media and directed by Alex Hoffman, the forthcoming feature documentary about the charismatic Hughes (AKA “Boots Electric”), The Redemption of the Devil, is an intimate and at times brutally honest portrayal of a year in the life of Jesse Hughes.

EODM was formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California by best friends Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme. Despite the name, EODM (Eagles Of Death Metal) is not a death metal band. The story goes that a friend was introducing Joshua Homme to the death metal genre, and Homme wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. With that, EODM was born. The band released Peace Love Death Metal in 2004, followed by Death By Sexy in 2006, and Heart On in 2008.
