FRIDAY FLASHBACK:  Seeing as Jon Anderson has taken his music to the sea with the recent launch of a prog cruise, BouleBlog felt this would make a good Friday Flashback.  Yes, this tour is long over, but, if you are fortunate enough, you can get tickets to see Anderson headline on the cruise.  Meanwhile, check out a show Anderson and Wakeman played just beyond my backyard in the Poconos.  Keep your eyes open for some hysterical lines from both of them!  Enjoy!

This blog has exposed me to a lot of new music.  It has also brought me close to many artists, opened many musical doors for me, and I learn something new every time I write something.  This review is unique in that while I was fortunate enough to work with the promoter for Jon Anderson, and his subsequent projects, I got to experience what many say is the heart and soul of progressive rock mainstays YES, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman live playing songs from the YES catalog that we all know and love, but also songs from Anderson/Wakeman’s new album The Living Tree.  While this is a review of the live act, I will make a quickie commentary on the album The Living Tree: I am going to get the disc based on the performances I saw at the Sherman Theater.

The Sherman Theater is an old venue in the heart of Stroudsburg, which is undergoing a touch of a renaissance lately.  The Sherman, I would say is undergoing it’s own renaissance, with some new elements and some signs of age.  Will call got our order confused, but such associations with promoters, press agents, etc., usually leads to snafu situations.  Unless person A talks directly to person B, and when I get there I talk to person B, then the situation usually devolves to Situation Normal, All Fouled Up.

While I most likely will recognize the YES tunes, the new pieces from The Living Tree and if Anderson does anything from his new disc Open, I may need help naming them.  Thanks to a cooperative soundman and an equally cooperative stage manager named Neil (if memory serves, no chance of that happening), we managed to take pictures of Jon’s personal set lists.

When I first heard The Alan Parsons Project, I was tuning into a classical music radio station to get my fill of relaxing music.  Little did I know, the station had changed formats and they were debuting the entire I Robot (at the time) LP.  Commercial breaks only from the end of side one to the beginning of side two.

When I first heard those sequenced synth sounds coming through my speakers, not only was I curious as to where my classical music had gone, but also I was very intrigued by what was coming through my speakers!  Ever since that day, I was hooked.  Then I started to hear more and more Alan Parsons songs on this station and others.  Then there were more tracks not only from the I Robot album, but new ones!

Now mind you, this was back in an era when there was no public internet and radio was still free.  So getting information on an artist was reduced to magazines, Creem, Rolling Stone, Circus, etc.  All these magazines stated unequivocally that The Alan Parsons Project was a studio project only.  Never to tour live.  Comprised of the best studio musicians and mates Parsons and long-time musical collaborator Eric Woolfson could muster.  Many of whom were already members of some of Europe’s greatest prog rock, pop and other genre groups.  David Paton of Pilot and Camel, Stuart Tosh of 10cc and also of Pilot, Ian Bairnson of (of all bands) The Bay City Rollers as well as being a sideman for Kate Bush, vocalists such as Lenny Zakatek and Allan Clarke, Dave Townsend and the list goes on and on.  Managing these people, their schedules and comprising a tour when the namesake of the band is one of the most sought after studio whiz-bangs in the industry and his cohort has little to no interest in going on the road (and has a rewarding career as a manager, songwriter and accidental vocalist) proved logistically impossible.  Until many years later…

JEFF BERLIN SETS SOME HIGH STANDARDS, HITS SOME LOW NOTES, AND TALKS IT UP WITH JEFF BOULE!

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  This entry is the first in many ways.  It is the first in the BouleBlog Friday Flashback series where we revisit blogs that were originally posted through the syndication.  It was also my first internet based interview.  As it is a repost, the release it refers to is a couple years old, and some of the less timely references have been removed.  Enjoy this first from the BouleBlog Friday Flashback series!

There used to be a blogger I worked with a while ago.  Anthony Medici, whom I admired for his tenacity, work ethic and integrity.  I especially respected him once he started to take on the major jazz publications and took them to task!  He also had some harsh words for a local public radio outlet near his hometown (Washington DC area).  But he knew his stuff about jazz, and were he still working for the blog, I would ask him to review Jeff Berlin’s new disc, and most likely ask him to do this interview.

It isn’t as though I am totally foreign to Berlin’s work.  I was first exposed to Jeff Berlin during his tenure with Bill Bruford’s fusion band, Bruford in the late 70’s.  Having recently purchased the “Bruford  – Rock Goes To College” DVD, I was able to watch a young Jeff Berlin toss around riffs with the likes of Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, among others.

Berlin has come a long way…

So far that, to the uninitiated with his solo career, as I (unfortunately am, but soon to be remedied), this is a gutsy move using bass as a lead instrument, especially on such highly regarded tunes as these.  Don’t worry, he pulls it off!

So instead of reviewing music I really don’t have the foundation to do, why not let the artist himself do it?!?!

Killing Joke MMXII

Killing Joke is a band that has been around since the late 1970’s.  They are one of the few surviving techno-punk bands still churning out new, meaningful material today.  Their newest album, MMXII gives us the best of both worlds of their schizophrenic existence.  One side of the Killing Joke coin is heavy, gritty, anger-filled bombast.  The other side, the calmer, cooler, collected Killing Joke has come with age and experience.

Some of that calmer, polished side comes from the vast experience of returning bass player/producer/re-mix artist Youth (officially Martin Glover, first named Pig Youth, also known as Orion) who also has worked with (those damn Beatles again) Paul McCartney in a group called The Firemen, but is most notably reputed as a house and techno mix-master.  Youth replaces the late Paul Raven who, while recording in Switzerland, after a session, returned to his room, fell asleep in a chair, and passed away of a heart attack.

It was at this point Killing Joke re-evaluated where they were, where they were going.
